P: ... ,,Przemyśliwał zatem Drake nad tem, jakby najlepiej przyswoić kartofle w Anglii, i nie tylko że udzielił sławnemu angielskiemu botanikowi John Gerardowi kilkanaście takich przywiezionych z sobą główek nasiennych, ale nadto oddał jedną część swemu własnemu ogrodnikowi z rozkazem, aby ten przewyborny owoc na jakiem urodzajnem miejscu swego ogrodu posadził i jak najtroskliwiej starał się o jego przyjęcie.''

i pokryła się mnóstwem zielonych jagód nasiennych,
z których ogrodnik, mając je za prawdziwy ich owoc, skoro tylko dojrzałem się zdały, jedną łakomie zerwał
 i skosztował ukradkiem. ''

P: ,,Ale nieznalazłszy ją bynajmniej smaczną i łąkotną, rzucił ją rozgniewany, że łożył tyle starań na przychowanie nie zdałego chwastu, i zaniósł samemu admirałowi kilka tych jagód, pytając go szyderczo: czyli to jest ów przewyborny, zagraniczny owoc z Ameryki? Admirał udał surową minę rzekł do niego: Ha, coż! Jeżli sądzisz, że się ta roślina na nic nie przyda, to ją najlepiej wyrzuć zaraz z korzeniem, nim jeszcze cały ogród zapaskudzi.''

P: ,,Uczynił toż ogrodnik ale na swoje zdumienie znalazł pod każdym krzakiem znaczną ilość taki samych jabłuszek, jakie był na wiosnę wsadził pojedynczo do ziemi. Zaraz więc zgotowano na rozkaz admirała kilka takich jabłuszek, i dano ogrodnikowi skosztować. Ach! Zawołał tenże zdziwiony- szkodaby było przecie wybornej rośliny, żeby ją zniszczyć miano, - i chodził odtąd
 z największą gorliwością około jej pomnożenia.''...
