E:The first inhabitants of Ireland were Fomorians called also Cethlenn → the mythical Celtic giants living

in Ireland before the arrival of Gael. The name Fomoriana comes from the word "mor" meaning apparition.

They had one leg and one hand.

E:Pierwszymi mieszkańcami Irlandii byli Fomorianie zwanymi też Cethlenn → mityczni celtyccy giganci zamieszkujących Irlandię przed przybyciem Gaelów. Nazwa Fomorianie pochodzi od słowa "mor" oznaczającego "zjawę".Mieli oni jedną nogę i jedną rękę.

 

E: The first people were invaded by Partholon's people, but they were killed by a plague sent by the Fomorians.

 

P: Pierwsi najechali Irlandię ludzie Partholona,
zostali oni jednak zabici przez plagę zesłaną
przez Fomorian.



 

E: Then came the chief Nememba with his people,
but they were enslaved.

 

P: Następnie przybyli ludzie pod wodzą Nemeda, zostali jednak zniewoleni.

E: The third invaders were the Firbolgs who conquered the Fomorian race, after which the two races lived together in peace.

 

P: Trzecimi najeźdźcami byli Firbolgowie, którzy podbili Fomorian, po czym te dwie rasy żyły razem w pokoju.

  

E: This lasted until the arrival of the Irish gods,
 who were Tuatha Dé Danann → "tribe,
people of the goddess Danann." They conquered
 the Firbolgs, and in the Second Battle of Magh Tuiredh defeated the Fomorians. With the aim of guaranteeing peace, Tuatha Dé promised the throne
 to one of the Fomorians, Bres.

 

P: Trwało to do przybycia bogów irlandzkich, którymi byli Tuatha Dé Danann → „plemię, lud bogini Danu”. Podbili oni Firbolgów, a w Drugiej Bitwie pod Magh Tuiredh pokonali Fomorian. Mając na celu zagwarantowanie pokoju, Tuatha Dé obiecali tron jednemu z Fomorian, Bresowi.

 

E: In the first battle of Mag Tured (Moytura), Nuada,
the king of the people, Tuatha Dé Danann, lost his hand. Although he won the Fir Bolgów, he was dethroned because of a disability that prevented him from exercising power. He was replaced by Bres, the king of Fomorian, who joined the two peoples under his rule. Brigid from the Dananian folk was then his wife. The Danians, however, were not satisfied with the new king. For when they came back from feasts organized outside, "their knives were not greasy from meat, they did not smell their breath with beer." He did not patronize their poets and musicians.

P: W pierwszej bitwie na Mag Tured (Moytura) Nuada, król ludu Tuatha Dé Danann stracił rękę.
 Pomimo, że zwyciężył w niej Fir Bolgów, został zdetronizowany z powodu kalectwa uniemożliwiającego mu sprawowanie władzy. Jego miejsce zajął Bres, król Fomorian, który połączył oba ludy pod swą władzę. Brigid z ludu Dananian została wówczas jego żoną. Dananianie nie byli jednak zadowoleni z nowego króla. Bowiem gdy wracali z uczt organizowanych na dworze, „noże ich nie były zatłuszczone od mięsiwa, oddech ich piwem nie woniał”. Nie patronował jak należy ich poetom i grajkom.

 

E: The Dananians then decided to give Nuada a silver hand. Doctor Dian Cécht and the blacksmith Creidne healed him, replacing him with a silver hand →
hence the iryjian nickname Argentlam or the Welsh Llud Llaw Ereint.

 

P: Dananianie postanowili wówczas doprawić Nuadzie srebrną dłoń. Lekarz Dian Cécht i kowal Creidne wyleczyli go, doprawiając mu srebrną dłoń → stąd iryjski przydomek Argentlam czy walijski Llud Llaw Ereint.

E: For this reason, Bres was banished
after seven years of rule. Nuada led his people to fight with the Fomors, giving them a second battle at Mag Tured. The Fomorians were defeated in it. Bres was protected by Luga Long Hands because he promised
 to teach Dananian the art of agriculture.

 

P: Bres z tego powodu został wygnany po siedmiu latach rządów. Nuada poprowadził swój lud do walki
 z Fomorami, wydając im drugą bitwę na Mag Tured. Fomorianie zostali w niej pokonani. Bres został ochroniony przez Luga Długorękiego, gdyż obiecał nauczyć Dananian sztuki rolnictwa.

 

E: Bres was portrayed as beautiful in appearance, however rough and inhospitable. Poem dindsenchas praises Bres as a "polite" and "noble" character and calls him the "flower" of the people Tuatha Dé Dnann.
 He also told about his death at the hands of Luga Long Hands. He decided to make three hundred wooden cows and fill them with bitter, toxic red liquid, which was "milked" into buckets. Bres was then offered to drink liquid. He, being obliged to hospitality, drank his eyelids without shaking and died.



 

 

 

P: Bres został sportretowany, jako piękny z wyglądu, jednak szorstki i niegościnny. Wiersz dindsenchas chwali Bresa, jako „uprzejmego” i „szlachetnego” charakteru oraz nazywa go „kwiatem” ludu Tuatha Dé Dnann. Opowiedział także o jego śmierci z ręki Luda Długorekiego. Ten postanowił wykonać trzysta drewnianych krów i napełnić je gorzkim, toksycznym czerwonym płynem, który „wydojono” do wiader. Zaoferowano wówczas Bresowi, by wypił płyn. Ten, będąc zobowiązany do gościnności, wypił bez drgnięcia powieki
 i zmarł.
