E: Samhain was the most important Celtic festival,
whose name means the end of summer → sam fuin.
 It was connected with the end of harvest and the year according to the Celtic calendar.

P: Samhain było najważniejszymy celtyckim świętem, którego nazwa oznacza koniec lata → sam e fuin. Związane było z zakończeniem żniw i roku według kalendarza celtyckiego.

 



 

E: According to beliefs on the night of Samhain's eve, ghosts of people who died during the past year
 and those who are not yet born descend to earth
in search of the living, to live in them for the next year.

 

P: Według wierzeń w noc wigilii Samhain duchy osób, które zmarły w trakcie minionego roku, oraz tych,
które się jeszcze nie narodziły, zstępują na ziemię
w poszukiwaniu żywych, by w nich zamieszkać
przez okres następnego roku.

E: The Celts were extinguishing all the fires and torches

so that their homes would look cold and inhospitable,
and set out ghost food outside the home.
They dressed themselves in old, torn clothes and walked the villages, pretending to be dirty vagabonds,
thanks to which no ghost wanted them.

 

 

P: Celtowie gasili wszelkie ogniska, kaganki i pochodnie, żeby ich domy wyglądały na zimne i niegościnne,
 a poza domem wystawiali żywność dla duchów.
Sami ubierali się w stare, podarte ubrania i chodzili
po wsiach udając brudnych włóczęgów, dzięki czemu miał
 ich nie zechcieć żaden duch.

P: Iryjczycy jeszcze w V w. n.e. w miejscu Mag Slecht mieli ofiarowywać bóstwu o imieniu Cromm Cruaich → Głowie Grobowca bądź Skrwawionej Głowie→
to wszystko, co pierworodne, i co trzeciego syna.
 Dom wodza miał być podpalany, a on sam – symbolicznie zabijany.
