In France between 1770 and 1780 it intensified... incessantly social process consisting in lowering the standard of living of the population, mainly due to the rapidly growing tax burden. Taxes not paid, however, magnates, nobles and cardinals church. He grew a deficit royal treasury, because only the court expenses of the monarch absorbed 15% of the state budget, although it was less than 20 - 30 years earlier, when the rate had fluctuated around 18%.

We Francji w latach 1770 i 1780 wzmagała się nieustannie proces społeczny polegający na obniżaniu się stopy życiowej ludności, głównie na skutek szybko rosnących obciążeń podatkowych. Podatków nie płacili jednak magnaci, arystokracja i purpuraci kościelni.
Rósł też deficyt skarbu królewskiego, bo tylko wydatki dworu monarchy pochłaniały 15% budżetu państwa, chociaż było to mniej niż 20 – 30 lat wcześniej, gdy wskaźnik ten oscylował w granicach 18%.

Król Ludwik XVI, dobrotliwy i ugodowy, próbujący zaprowadzić jakieś reformy, na takiego kozła ofiarnego się nie nadawał. Natomiast królowa Maria Antonina, cudzoziemka, otoczona przepychem, błyszcząca urodą
i bogactwem – jak najbardziej. Ją więc oskarżano
w licznych pamfletach o rozwiązłość, wiarołomstwo, spiski

Dotyczyła ona wielkiego oszustwa finansowego, rozegranego w imieniu królowej, choć bez jej udziału i wiedzy, w gronie kardynała Rohana, zabiegającego o jej względy, pewnej hrabiny i jej małżonka z dworu królowej i dwóch bankierów-jubilerów, mających na zbyciu najdroższy naszyjnik wszech czasów, zwany „klejnotem dla królów”.
