November 20, 1820 British whaling ship Essex was rammed and sunk by a sperm whale in the distance

E:The crew consists of 20 people, including a sailor only that deserted. The survivors moved on three whaling boats (lifeboats) and a month after drifting Pacific.

E: February 18, 1821 the first mate Owen Chase, Benjamin Lawrence helmsman and cabin boy Thomas Nickerson were rescued by an English ship. Three days later, Captain George Pollard and Charles Ramsdell sailor found an American ship. The last three survivors who remained on the island of Henderson, helmsman Thomas Chappel and sailors Seth Weeks and William Wright, were rescued April 9, 1821 by a ship sent after them, who went after them to the island of Ducie.

P: Cała ta historia zainspirowała Hermana Melville'a do napisania powieści ,,Moby Dick''. Melville przy pisaniu swej powieści korzystał przede wszystkim z ,,Narrative of the Most Extraordinary and Distressing Shipwreck of the Whale-Ship Essex – relacji Owena Chase'a'', pierwszego oficera na Essex.

 

 

 

 

 

 

E: ,, Moby Dick or the Whale '' is considered one of the masterpieces of world literature and classics of American literature. In the beginning (1851) met with negative adoption of readers and critics. It was not until the mid-twentieth century began to re-explore the works of Melville's novel won acclaim and high position in the canon of world literature.

 

 

 

 

 

 

P: ,,Moby Dick albo Wieloryb'' (w oryg. ,,Moby Dick or the Whale''), uznawana jest za jedno z arcydzieł literatury światowej i klasykę literatury amerykańskiej. Na początku ( 1851- rok wydania) spotkała się z negatywnym przyjęciem czytelników i krytyki. Dopiero gdy w połowie XX wieku zaczęto na nowo poznawać twórczość Melville'a, powieść zdobyła uznanie i wysoką pozycję w kanonie literatury światowej.
